Bite, Retainers, Aligners and Whitening Trays: What’s the Difference?

Many patients often hear terms like bite, retainer, aligner or whitening tray and assume they all refer to the same thing.
In reality, these devices have very different purposes.
Understanding their functions helps you know what type of appliance you’re using, why it’s prescribed, and how to take care of it properly.

Bite: protection and muscle relaxation

A bite (or occlusal splint) is a rigid resin appliance usually worn at night.
Its purpose is to protect the teeth from wear caused by bruxism (grinding or clenching) and to relax the masticatory muscles.
It can also relieve tension or discomfort in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), helping to rebalance the bite.
The bite is a passive device – it doesn’t move the teeth but helps protect and stabilize them.

Retainers: keeping your smile aligned

After completing an orthodontic treatment with braces or aligners, it’s essential to maintain the achieved alignment.
That’s where retainers come in. They can be:

  • Fixed retainers, a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth.
  • Removable retainers, similar to clear trays worn for a few hours a day or overnight.

Retainers do not move teeth, but they prevent them from shifting back to their original position, maintaining the final result over time.

Aligners: moving teeth gradually and discreetly

Clear aligners are transparent, removable trays used to gradually move teeth into the desired position.
Each set applies gentle, controlled forces and is replaced every few days according to the treatment plan.
They are a modern alternative to traditional braces: invisible, comfortable, and removable for eating and brushing.
Once treatment is completed, retainers are needed to preserve the new alignment.

Whitening trays: aesthetic use only

Whitening trays are custom-made transparent trays designed to hold a whitening gel (usually containing hydrogen or carbamide peroxide) in contact with the teeth for a set period of time.
Their purpose is purely cosmetic: to evenly distribute the gel and lighten the colour of the enamel.
They do not move or protect teeth and should only be used under professional supervision for limited periods.

Nowadays, these devices are designed, planned, and manufactured through digital processes — including intraoral scanners, AI-powered CAD software, and 3D printers.
